I really enjoy getting under the skin of businesses. I like to find out what makes them tick. And in order to do this, I created a series called ‘a few minutes with…’ that interviewed equestrian and country entrepreneurs to find out ore about their businesses.

These articles are really so, so interesting… and hugely inspiring too! Seeing the journey that many equestrian and rural entrepreneurs have taken (and how no two are alike!), gives us all hope!

Ailsa Reeve
Ailsa Reeve is the lady behind Caracal Equestrian, a lovely company that provides riders from all sports with a range of show and competition shirts made using different fabrics, to produce something special. In addition to this, Ailsa offers a bespoke service, for those who want a specific combination of fabrics or a made to measure fit. In this ‘a few minutes with…’, I quiz Ailsa about Caracal Equestrian and her background.

Tell us about you and your background

I grew up around horses and, on leaving school, I decided to make a career
out of riding. After having a couple of serious accidents, I decided to go
back to education and studied Fashion Design at Manchester Art School. Shortly after I graduated, Caracal Equestrian was born! I still produce young
horses/ponies and still event with British Eventing in my spare time.

What made you want to start a business?

I was interning in London for a large fashion house and I hated how rude
everyone was, so when I got a bit of down time where I was working, I
started to think about the equestrian clothing world and what was missing.

How is Caracal Equestrian different?

Caracal EquestrianIt is full of colour! The equestrian world is a very traditional world to
be a part of. I love it, but I saw a gap where high fashion
could fit into it. The shirts up to date are still very
traditional, all made in 100% cotton, and have a tailored fitted look, but
they are colourful and fun while still in the keeping with the dress codes!

What makes your products special?

Each product is either handmade by myself or very carefully sourced
machinists, so the quality on each garment is second to none. Everything is
made here in England, and the fabric I choose is mainly natural fibres, ie
cottons. A lot of clothing nowadays is polyester, which doesn’’t breathe
and does not have the same quality to it as cotton does. All you have to
do is feel the shirts and you can tell- the fabric screams quality.
I also offer a bespoke service, so people can make their shirts really

unique to them.

If you had to sum up Caracal Equestrian in five words, what would they be?

Stylish, bespoke, colourful, innovative and sophisticated.

Do you have a motto or ethos?

To produce a brand that people can really trust.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring business owner, what

would it be?

Caracal EquestrianTo make sure your product is different, to set yourself apart from any other competitor, and be prepared to work your butt off and not see a huge result straight away. Get advice from anyone and anywhere, and have fun! I
always remember reading a quote from Richard Branson saying, “if you start a business to get rich then you will not be successful but if you start a business that you really love and believe in then you will make it a success” which I think is extremely true!

One thing that helps you run your business more effectively

Apart from my sewing machines?! Canva is great for all the social media
content. And my Camera! I take all of the product shots and photos myself,
so I suppose without that I would be a lot worse off!

Best thing about running a business?

Being able to be creative everyday and work for myself! I also get to be
around a world that I know and love, so merging horses and fashion is a
dream come true.

Worst thing about running a business?

Trying to keep morale high when you are having a bad week/month/show. You
have to be extremely strong and determined to make a success of a
business.

Johanna Bloor

Today’s ‘a few minutes with…’ is all about Johanna Bloor, the incredibly creative and super talented lady behind Hanrose Photoart. I am lucky enough to own an R and an F from Jo’s photo art collection, and also have a lovely range of candles that small DIVINE. Jo’s packaging is also something of dreams… so I wanted to share a bit more about the lady herself with you.

Tell us about you and your background

Hi I’m Jo, I have lived in East Sussex all my life, have been married for 26 years and have two incredible children Rosie & Teddy. I had my first pony Cracker when I was nine and have never looked back. Rosie started riding at 3, she’s now 25 & will probably not ever, not have ponies. Even Teddy dabbled for a season with a lead rein hunter pony, one a few sashes and got his picture in the H&H.

What made you want to start a business?

I didn’t intend to start a business, it just happened! Needing to purchase an equestrian theme gift, I spent hours searching for the perfect present, but nothing appealed to me. I was at a loss! Having always admired alphabet photography (the art of photographing objects that resemble the letters of the alphabet), it occurred to me that I could create a totally original gift by selecting and photographing suitable equestrian items and use the photographs to spell out the recipient’s name. With camera in hand it wasn’t long before I had surpassed the original eight letters needed and had produced the entire alphabet. Hanrose ‘Photoart’ was born. I decided at this point to enlist a friends photographic skills to create the hundred plus images that are available to choose from today.

How is Hanrose Photoart different?

Hanrose Photo ArtNo one does what I do with regards to the equestrian alphabet for the Photoart, which is great, but also has its downside as so many people are unaware of its existence.

What makes your products special?

Hanrose ‘Photoart’ are unique, personalised pieces providing that perfect gift for someone special, or indeed, yourself! Our mini quote posters & cards are great for the designer loving equestrian. Candles and our most recent addition of wax melts, are all handmade from soy. Candles aren’t a new idea, but our names give them a different twist, ‘Apple Explosion’ ‘Half-Halt’ & ‘Riding in the Rain’ are just three from the ever growing collection. Again making not just a a great little gift, but thoughtful as you can pick a fragrance whether if be floral, fresh or fruity for the person in mind. Don’t take flowers to a dinner party, take a ‘Summer Meadow’ scented candle! Then, dare I mention it…. Christmas. The decorations created are silhouettes of horses, saddles, rosettes etc and last year there was a donkey and a unicorn. Made from metallic, pearlescent or glitter infused acrylic and hung from gorgeous ribbon. I had better get cracking with this year’s creations!

If you had to sum up Hanrose Photoart in five words, what would they be?

Hanrose CandleUnique, bespoke, quirky, fun & fragrant

Do you have a motto or ethos?

Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring business owner, what would it be?

A quote I used recently ‘Better an oops, than a what if’. You’re going to make mistakes, so better to learn from them, than regret not tying something.

One thing that helps you run your business more effectively

A quiet house

Best thing about running Hanrose Photoart?

Coming up with new ideas and being able to implement them.

Worst thing about running a business

Admin & packaging, although the candles & wax melts are fun with the hay & popcorn.

Rachel BraggI’m very lucky to say that Rachel Bragg, the lady behind Sweet-Images Photography, is a coaching client and friend of mine and it’s been an honour and a privilege to see her business grow so quickly in the last few months. I took the chance to ask her a few questions, so you could get to know her as well as I do. Enjoy!

Tell us about you and your background

I’m Rachel Bragg, I hail from Bedfordshire originally, a place I generally refer to as “The Shire”. However through a military marriage I’ve lived all over the south of England but now happily based on the Somerset/Dorset border.  I’m an equine photographer who first started working in this field about four years ago. Initially as a freelance event photographer working for some of the country’s leading on site equine photographers and then more latterly I’ve been slowly building my equestrian portrait side too.

What made you want to start a business?

I knew very early on in my working life that I really didn’t want to be the person that lined the pockets of a faceless company owner for all my life.  It just took me a long time to work out just exactly what it was I wanted to do enough to be able to step away from the corporate world and find my own feet.  Don’t get me wrong, I worked for two amazing USA based global lifestyle brands whilst wearing my 9-5 badge for nearly 20 years, so it wasn’t that I ever hated what I did or even didn’t feel appreciated.  I just knew it wasn’t for me forever.  It was actually whilst standing at the side of a road with a little compact camera about 5 years ago whilst waiting for my husband who was competing in an Ironman competition (I was diligently taking some snaps of him whizz past on his bike) that I realised that much of my time in recent years had been spent taking snaps like this. Roadside, poolside or ringside.  Initially this started from the outside of the show ring snapping away at my best show horse who was produced by a show team during the early ‘norties’ and then after meeting the man I married, with him at various endurance events.  I no longer had horses of my own but wanted to be involved in the horse world in some way still.  I put two and two together and finally made four.

How is Sweet-Images Photography different?

Well I guess one of the more simple answers to that is ‘me’.  I don’t mean that in a big-headed way (and any one that knows me would know that’s not my character anyway), I just simply mean that whilst I don’t have a specialist skill or a unique business, I do have me on my side.   From a photographic aspect my chosen style of images tends to be a more matt and de-saturated look that’s developing all the time.

What makes your Sweet-Images Photography special?

Initially I used to think this was a little tricky for me to answer because on the face of it there’s many other equine photographers out there and many of the basic ideas, image compositions and products etc can be quite similar.   So I look at it in a slightly different way – it’s my fabulous clients actually make the product special.  Each relationship between client and horse is highly individual.   Photography, of any form, is about capturing moments or connections.  Within equine portrait work a good photograph will directly highlight to those connected to the photo that it is full of meaning to them.  A great photograph goes beyond that and reaches out to those totally unconnected to the subject too. It’s actually the way the client and their horse interacts with each other that leads me to be able to capture those moments that can make the product special.

If you had to sum up Sweet-Images Photography in five words, what would they be?

Equine photography that breathes emotion.

Do you have a motto or ethos?

Immortalising Dreams.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring business owner, what would it be?

Not everyone is your customer.  Square pegs and round holes just don’t work well together, however ever much you want to force them to.  If I feel that what they are looking for from their images they would be unlikely to get from me, I will always suggest alternative photographers for them to consider approaching.  It was only on Friday evening that I was discussing this with a potential client.

One thing that helps you run your business more effectively

Sweet Images PhotographyDon’t laugh, I have a dictaphone….! I suffer with a bit of a butterfly head, mentally flitting here and there.  I really do suffer with a brain that forgets or flits off to something else. I can’t tell you how many times I have to rewind audiobooks or go back a page or two in a book or think of a great idea and then have no ability to write it down or remember it.  So the dictaphone goes everywhere with me. I even whipped it out whilst freelancing at Devon County this year and blurted something into it whilst a Steward stood next to me laughing. Also, when you really should have been called Dory, you get these great moments of ‘oh my gosh yes’, when you replay the dictaphone back at your desk and the lightbulb moment is thrown back at you!

Best thing about running a business?

The time factor – if I need to go to Boots at 10am I can.  If my lunch break (hahahahahaha) comes outside of the recognised working 12-2pm slot, then what the heck!  If I feel ill, or I need to just stop for a bit, I no longer feel awful about taking some time off to recover or to give myself a break.  Yes it potentially impacts me financially but I don’t feel the stigma thats often associated with time off when you work in an employed environment.

Worst thing about running a business?

The time factor – sometimes pulling 18+ hour days because you feel you need to.

Amy Porterfield is my current favourite.

Top business book you’ve read

I’ve read many in the last 18 months and I can pick things from most of the books I’ve read that have stuck with me. However the simplicity of Carrie Green’s ‘She Means Business’ means I really connected with it on a personal level.  I think the fact that so many small business owners, run by women, also find this book in their Top 3 shows just how great a book it is. I have the physical book and it on audio and I’ll frequently stick it on in the car to give myself a little reminder.

One thing we might not know about you.

I’m actually an introvert. I’m not shy, that’s different, but naturally I find being in company really tiring, even when I’m enjoying myself.  This isn’t always the easiest to manage from a business aspect, let alone a personal one. Not many will notice a difference or would even be aware of it because I do try very hard to be ‘normal’ and I do enjoy company and get involved. However, for me, after any kind of gathering – be it work, dinner out with friends or a simple drink – I really have to regroup myself. As a freelance photographer this can be really hard work to manage if I’m at an event for many days in succession and frequently the tent/camper van/hotel room is a sanctuary of a different kind for me…

Top business achievement.

Still being in business? Gosh I don’t know because I’m not sure I’m wired in that way and I don’t feel I’ve been going long enough, I’m still very much finding my feet. However having an article of mine in print in an equine magazine this year was pretty blooming marvellous for me!

The Gin KitcheDo I have a treat for you this week!? If you love gin, this is a gem! In this ‘a few minutes with…’ I catch up with Chloe Bucknell from The Gin Kitchen… a mobile gin bar. I know. I spoil you…

Tell us about you and your background
We are two childhood friends, Chloe Bucknell and Evie Marsh, who found a joint love of horses and all things country at a young age. Even before we were old enough to drink gin, we were thinking about it. Our parents may have only allowed us to try the tonic, but we knew for years it would taste better with juniper berries and a few botanicals. From our first sip, we fell in love with the infused drinks and soon became ‘ginfatuated’!

Chloe has a background within the Events & Exhibition Industry whilst Evie has the Hospitality and Catering knowledge. Having visited many distilleries across the globe, combined with hundreds of hours spent serving behind pub bars and finally, sampling over 250 expressions, we decided to share our experience with everyone. With our love of the outdoors and gin collided, we found ourselves creating The Gin Kitchen.

The Gin KitchenWhat made you want to start a business?
We actually happened to be sat in a pub having a in tipple after a long day out horse riding when we came up with the idea of being the UK’s answer to stationary drinking. With gin fans increasing by the day all over the world, we thought it was only right we supported this concept by occupying the minds and hearts of gin drinkers. Even those who claim they don’t like the generic ‘gin’ drink, we have proven to change their mind with our vast and continuously growing collection. Gin has never been this good, and it might never be this good again! We want to encourage people to enjoy it whilst they can, by letting us put a drink of their choice firmly in their hand, at events all over the UK.

How is your The Gin Kitchen different?
Unlike other mobile bars, we offer a gin experience alongside their chosen G&T. We’re all about customer service, providing people with a high-class drink to enjoy whilst creating a new experience for the gin loving community. We have so many ideas that will all be revealed over the next 12 months but we guarantee there is a gin out there for everyone. We offer packages for ‘Tie-The-Knot’ kind of days to Corporate Brand Launches or Birthday parties, the range of events we cater for is endless! The Gin Kitchen provides you with a contemporary yet country mobile horse trailer bar, knowledgable and friendly staff but most importantly, high-quality G&T’s and Gin Fizz Cocktails throughout your event.

If you had to sum up The Gin Kitchen in five words, what would they be?
Unique, Fun, Creative, Dynamic, Gin-Lovers!

Do you have a motto or ethos?
“It’s never too early for Gin O’Clock”

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring business owner, what would it be?
Challenge yourself and never give up on your dreams. We both had an idea that we turned into reality and it makes you extremely proud to see hard work paying off. Take the risk and believe in yourself but most importantly, enjoy it and have fun!

One thing that helps you run your business more effectively?
Our trusty Apple products! Our iPads turn into our till systems, our Macbooks into our Marketing tools and our iPhones for being sociable on the go.

Best thing about running a business?
We get to choose who we work with, lucky for us, we’re two great friends who know get to spend even more time together. Not only that, we have taken the risks and are proud of the rewarding outcome of what we are achieving. We’ve challenged one another but we’ve followed our passion and we both feel pride in building our own business for other people to enjoy.

Worst thing about running a business?
Besides drinking far too many gin samples… Hmm, I can’t think of any negatives that The Gin Kitchen has provided us!
