Butler Stewart is a lovely British brand run by Anna Butler. Actually, it was Anna who very kindly let me borrow a couple of her beautiful Jemma Jackets for my TEDx talk in April. But it’s not all about jackets! In addition to the beautiful Jemma, Butler Stewart also has a range of coats, waistcoats, jeans, shirts and accessories for men and women with a passion for country life and shooting. Now, to fill you in on the brand and its Game Fair activities, it’s over to Anna.

neck warmerToday I’m giving away this gorgeous Faux Fur Neck Warmer, kindly donated by the lovely Annabel Brocks. Annabel has donated a bubblegum pink tweed and natural faux fur version. It’s so snug and looks so stylish too.

Why am I giving away a Faux Fur Neck Warmer from Annabel Brocks?

It’s a superb product, designed by a very, very talented lady! I own the pewter version (which is pewter velvet on one side and a slightly darker faux fur on the other) and it’s lovely. It makes you feel special when you put it on and it keeps you warm… and I know that at this time of year, both of these things are much needed!

Why do I like the Faux Fur Neck Warmer?

Designed by Annabel and made in the UK, the neck warmer is exceptional quality and a really lovely addition to any winter wardrobe. It has a clever design that incorporates a split in the middle on one side, which makes it easy to post one end of the neck warmer through, to keep it in the perfect position all day long. The one I’ve been given to give is bubblegum pink tweed, but the range online contains other variations in faux fur and tweeds, so there’s something to suit all tastes.

Would you like to win a Faux Fur Neck Warmer from Annabel Brocks?

You absolutely do! I have one to giveaway… and the competition is only running until midnight on the day this blog is published. If you read this afterwards, don’t worry, you can find the whole of Annabel Brocks’ range, including neck warmers, on Annabel Brocks website. However, if you’re in time, all you need to do it pop on over to my Rhea Freeman PR Facebook page, watch the video that will be pinned to the top today and enter. That’s it! Of course, I’d love it if you’d tell your friends by sharing the post.

I hope you enjoy my advent calendar competition – best of luck!

Sian ReekieI first found The Hettie Company after watching Sophie Callahan’s wedding video and being completely smitten with Barney the Spaniel’s bowtie that he wore at the wedding. I followed the link and found out more… and when I got chance to ask the lovely Sian some questions, I jumped at the chance…

Tell us about you and your background

I’m Siân, and along with my son Tom and his wife Stephanie we are The Hettie Company.

We love to spend time together as a family, and enjoy nothing better than all gathering around the table sharing food and laughter. The family is growing steadily with toddlers adding their fun and noise, and of course our dogs are very much part of everything. We can’t imagine not having a dog around, and they have inspired us to include the pet accessories as part of our range.

What made you want to start The Hettie Company?

Hettie was born out of an idea that started around the garden table one evening at one of our BBQs. These are something we have regularly, in proper British style ‘whatever the weather’. We live in the The Hettie Companybeautiful countryside in Warwickshire near the river, and have many beautiful walks and villages right on our doorstep. We wanted to design and make a country inspired collection, and having come across the gorgeous fabrics of Abraham Moon we knew that these would be perfect. There are so many beautiful fabrics for us to choose from and we have so many ideas for product ranges for the future!

How is your business different?

We specialise in luxury accessories, and our collection harnesses two significant consumer trends in the U.K. by offering high quality co-ordination for dogs and their fashion conscious owners. We saw an opportunity in the market to bring together durable and stylish pet accessories and high fashion bags and accessories for their owners.

What makes your products special?

It was logical for us to focus on offering sartorial, elegant and eye catching design to dog and owner in one collection. We’ve chosen to make our collection here in the U.K. using the classic fabrics of Moon who have a long history and heritage and are renowned throughout the world. The contemporary combined with the traditional. The wool we use is sustainable, natural and ecofriendly.

If you had to sum up The Hettie Company in five words, what would they be?

Fresh, simple, elegant, classic and different

The Hettie CompanyDo you have a motto or ethos?

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice, help or anything else. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. And don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring business owner, what would it be?

Very hard just to think of one thing! Don’t give up I would say. Take time to consider your options before spending money on things such as advertising and marketing, sampling etc, and going with your gut instinct is probably a good idea. I read recently that in Coca Cola’s first year in 1886, sales averaged nine drinks per day. That first year Pemberton sold only 25 gallons of syrup. For his efforts, Pemberton grossed $50.00 and spent $ 73.96 on advertising !

Anna ButlerAs Butler Stewart celebrates its second birthday this week, I wanted to share with you a bit about this lovely tweed company and its founder Anna Butler. Here’s her ‘a few minutes with…’

Tell us about you and your background

I am incredibly lucky to have had a fantastic childhood growing up on my family farm in Essex. With my love of design I completed a degree in BA (Hons) Exhibition, Museum and Event Design. I then went on to live in London where I discovered my love for fabric and tailoring. I have always had a passion for the countryside; I regularly participate in country sports and spent a numbers of years working in the shooting industry where I gained invaluable experience and contacts.

What made you want to start Butler Stewart?

After working in London in the high-end retail industry for many years I decided I wanted to start up an exclusive brand selling country and town clothing for men and ladies. Tweed is often associated with muddy farmers and English gentry but my aim is to help change this perception by designing beautiful timeless garments that can be worn with your everyday wardrobe.

How is Butler Stewart different?

Butler Stewart focuses on high quality tweed, exquisite tailoring and intricate detail. Butler Stewart also offers a popular made to order service allowing customers to create a unique garment, a niche when exhibiting at shows around the UK.

What makes your products special?

I have an amazing tailor who takes my designs and creates the most beautiful pieces. All the collections are tailored in limited edition ensuring you stand out from the crowd. The collections are made up of unique styles, distinctive features and colourful fabrics creating understated British elegance.

If you had to sum up your business in five words, what would they be?

Specialising in tailoring and tweed.

Do you have a motto or ethos?

My personal favourite: What if I fall? Oh, but my darling what if you fly.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring business owner, what would it be?Joanna Jacket Butler Stewart

A strong and bulletproof business plan and budget is key. I regularly update and refer back to my business plan to make sure that I am staying on track with what I would like to achieve. It is very important to create a clear brand. Customers must understand what your business is all about and this is fundamentally built around your brand.

One thing that helps you run your business more effectively

I can’t live without Photoshop! The design programme allows me to customise images so that I can regularly update my website and to promote the brand and garments through newsletters, social media and print advertising and to have excellent visual merchandising at the shows.

Best thing about running a business?

Being your own boss is exceptionally satisfying (and terrifying). It can be extremely hard work but the rewards are more than worth it.

Worst thing about running a business?

Being a sole trader can be very daunting, I have found it is very important to have a strong network of business connections and also supportive friends and family.

Top business blog you follow

I regularly read Drapers’ Blog, featuring different key industry leaders, which helps keep me up to date with all the latest fashion, retail news and advice.

Top business book you’ve read

When researching about a start up business I picked up many useful tips from ‘Build a business from your kitchen table’ by Sophie Cornish and Holly Tucker (the founders of notonthehighstreet.com

One thing we might not know about youButler Stewart

My ancestor, George Courtauld, established a successful textile company in the Essex countryside called George Courtauld & Co. and was a worldwide manufacturer of fabric, clothing and artificial fibres. My curiosity in my ancestors from a young age helped strengthen my interest in fabric and tailoring.
